New ACRL Professional Development Webinar Available for Viewing

ACRL-OR is pleased to offer complimentary archive access to select ACRL professional development eLearning webinars for Oregon academic librarians. The newest addition to the webinar lineup is Beyond Worksheets: Using Instructional Technologies for Authentic Assessment of Student Learning. This webinar was originally broadcast on April 7, 2015.

ACRL e-Learning logoThese webinars are a benefit of ACRL-OR membership, thus a librarian holding ACRL-OR membership must sponsor any planned webinar event. These webinars can be used as professional development opportunities for your library or small group gathering, but please note that ACRL stipulates that these webinars are only for single-location viewing.

To schedule a webinar viewing, please use the following guidelines:

  1. An ACRL-OR member librarian must sponsor the webinar event and serve as the event contact.
  2. Choose an archived webinar from the list of available webinars.
  3. Check the webinar calendar to be sure the webinar you want is available on the date of your event.
  4. Request webinar access by emailing ACRL-OR Board Member, Uta.Hussong-Christian; include the webinar title and date of your event (your request will be added to the webinar calendar).
  5. Please abide by ACRL’s (national) guidelines for chapter use of these webinars: “Your group registration allows you to project the Webcast to participants in the same location.” This means that only one login is allowed per event and that the webinar is only for single-location viewing. The designated contact should not provide the webinar login to other individuals for the purposes of remote viewing outside of the scheduled event. These are ACRL’s limitations in exchange for complimentary access; ACRL-OR asks that you respect these limitations.

Three Ways You Can Follow ACRL-OR Updates

ACRL-Oregon has revamped our online presence, with a new blog liaison model and regular postings of news and updates on the blog homepage of our site, https://acrloregon.org/.

Interested in hearing more about ACRL-Oregon events and news, but don’t have time to keep checking in on the blog? Here are three easy ways you can sign up for automated updates from the ACRL-Oregon blog:

1. RSS:

RSS links for ACRL-Oregon site

Direct your browser to https://acrloregon.org/feed/ for an RSS feed of blog posts. If you already use an RSS reader, you know what to do! If you aren’t familiar with RSS, check out this simple explanation at whatisrss.com for details and how to use it. (This page at http://alternativeto.net/software/google-reader/ also includes info about and links to RSS alternatives to Google Reader.)

2. Smart Bookmarks:

Raindrop.io logoLike the idea of RSS, but don’t want to deal with another program to install and use? If you’re a Firefox user, you’ll see a prompt to add the feed as a smart bookmark — which updates automatically with each new post — as soon as you click the link to our feed. Chrome doesn’t support this natively, but you can add the excellent raindrop.io extension to do exactly the same thing.

3. Follow via Email:

On the top right column of the ACRL-Oregon blog and homepage under the “Follow Blog via Email” heading, click the Follow button and enter your e-mail address. ACRL-OR Video Hangout on Data Management, May 27th

ACRL-OR is excited to launch a new professional development initiative.

You are invited to attend the inaugural video hangout, Data Management with Amanda Whitmire, on Tuesday, May 27th from noon-1:00pm. Amanda will provide a brief overview of data management in academia and then facilitate a group discussion. Bring your questions and experiences to enhance the group learning opportunity! Amanda Whitmire, Ph.D. is Data Management Specialist/Assistant Professor at Oregon State University Libraries; she focuses on training in data stewardship for grad students and faculty, data curation in OSU’s IR, and consulting on data management plans.

New Book: Library Scholarly Communication Programs

From Woodhead Publishing:  This practical primer covers these issues for institutional repository managers, library administrators, and other staff involved in library based repository and publishing services. After an introduction which describes the evolution of scholarly communication programs within academic libraries, chapters explore institutional repositories and library publishing services. OLA Quarterly – Spring 2014 Call for Proposals/Papers

If you have never published/considered publishing in OLA Quarterly before, this is a great opportunity! This spring (March 2014), OLA Quarterly and the OASL Interchange will be producing a joint issue focused on “Libraries across the Lifespan”–and we’d like to see contributions from academic libraries/librarians in the mix.

Call for Papers/Proposals:

Although every type of library—from public to school to academic to special—offers different collections and different services to meet the needs of our patrons at various points in their lives, all libraries have a shared mission: provide everyone with equal opportunities to access information, to explore, and to learn. This special joint issue of the OLA Quarterly and OASL’s Interchange will celebrate people, projects, and services at libraries across Oregon that are living that mission; it will offer a snapshot of how Oregon libraries are working together to serve Oregonians across their lifespan.

For this issue, the editors welcome submissions that describe and/or evaluate projects or services that have had a positive impact on the communities they serve.  Articles that focus on services aimed at a specific age group (e.g. children, teens, college students, adults, older adults) are especially encouraged, as are submissions that describe collaborations between different types of libraries (e.g. between school and public libraries or school and academic libraries, etc.). The editors hope to publish a variety of articles that provide examples of library services across the lifespan.

Submissions must be received by January 6, 2014 to be considered for the issue. Questions, article ideas/queries and submissions may be sent to either issue editor:
