Oregon Digital Newspaper Project Wins Award for Excellence

The UO Libraries’ Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP) has won the 2011 Oregon Award for Excellence from the Oregon chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL-Oregon). The annual award recognizes an individual or group who achieves excellence in the field by significantly improving Oregon academic libraries or librarianship.

This year, ODNP was recognized for the program’s positive impact on Oregon libraries and residents in digitizing historic Oregon newspaper content and making it freely available to the public through a keyword-searchable database.

The ODNP resource, which offers users access to more than 180,000 pages of content from 31 Oregon newspapers dating from 1846 to 1922, is at http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/. Samples of historical research by public users on such varied topics as the 1905 World’s Fair in Portland, Hawaiians in Oregon, bicycling, tatoos, salmon, and even peanut butter can be found at the ODNP blog at http://odnp.wordpress.com/.

In receiving the ACRL-Oregon award, the program team was commended for its initiative in pursuing grant money to assist in funding the project and its commitment to making searchable historic content more widely accessible.

  1. As usual, another great write up. Keep up the good work, we do all appreciate it even if we don’t always post comments to say so.
