Have you been considering ways that you could be an advocate for Oregon’s libraries? If so, volunteer to help launch Oregon’s first Library Snapshot Day. Hannah Gascho Rempel is looking for people interested in joining an OLA task force to create a pilot version of Library Snapshot Day in Oregon later this spring.

Library Snapshot Day is an effort to gather data and pictures from all types of libraries across the state on a single day to illustrate the importance libraries have in our communities. The data and pictures can be used for advocating to legislators, administrators and community members. States across the country will be holding their own Library Snapshot Day this winter and spring.

For examples of what other states have done for Library Snapshot Day, check out these two resources:

The Association of College and Research Libraries encourages members to volunteer for immediate service on one of the following new committees responsible for managing and coordinating ACRL’s program for liaising with other organizations interested in higher education:

Liaisons Coordinating Committee – Oversees and coordinates the ACRL liaison relationship activities across all levels of the association; establishes and manages processes of establishing liaison relationships and provides common guidelines for appointing liaisons to the ACRL units managing liaison relationships; assesses effectiveness of the liaison program and makes recommendations for its improvement; communicates assessment findings with the ACRL Board and future directions for the liaison program.

Liaisons Grants Committee – Manages liaison program support budget; establishes and manages competitive processes for liaisons to apply for funding for specific liaison activities over a defined period of time with a focus on assessable outcomes.

Liaisons Training & Development Committee – Manages ALA Connect Community for Liaisons; provides training and resource materials for liaisons including suggestions for communicating the results of liaison work to ACRL membership.

ACRL members interested in volunteering for a term starting immediately on one of the above committees should send a short expression of interest to President Lisa Hinchliffe at ljanicke@illinois.edu by November 30, 2010. They should also complete the online volunteer form at http://www.acrl.org/volunteer.

A new open access, peer-reviewed journal is available through Pacific University Library’s repository, CommonKnowledge. The journal is a partnership between Pacific University and Central Washington University. Please feel free to share information about this journal with faculty at your institutions – we hope this will be a great opportunity for undergraduates to have their work published/shared more broadly. Information about the journal is below:

The Pacific Northwest Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities is a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding scholarship by undergraduates and their mentors from academic institutions of higher learning in the Pacific Northwest. The Journal accepts submissions of research articles, fiction, poetry, photography, videos, and other creative works from undergraduate students in all academic disciplines. Each submission must be the original work of at least one undergraduate student with at least one faculty mentor, although the work may be submitted shortly after the student(s) has graduated.

Additionally, the Journal provides an opportunity for undergraduates to gain valuable experience with the peer-review process. Faculty and students at institutions of higher learning in the Pacific Northwest review every submission. Whenever possible, reviews are done by student-faculty pairs so that student reviewers can be mentored through the process.

Thus, the purpose of the Journal is:

To encourage and showcase scholarly work in all disciplines.

To provide a beneficial learning experience for undergraduate students.

To provide a setting for dissemination of research, ideas and creative concepts.

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and will be published on the Journal website after successful review. Our goal is to have submissions reviewed within 8 – 12 weeks. However, the process may take longer depending on the availability of reviewers.

If you are interested in assisting with the Journal or serving as a peer reviewer, please contact the Co-managing Editors, Dr. James Butler (jjbutler@pacificu.edu) and Dr. Natalie Lupton (luptonn@cwu.edu).

Diane mentioned our new “liaison program” briefly in a post below but I thought I’d take a moment to expand on this a bit.

The goal of the liaison program is to help ACRL Oregon facilitate communication among all academic libraries in the state. The long-term goal is to have a liaison in every academic library in the state of Oregon. This liaison will have the ability to post news to this blog. The liaisons will be expected to post news from their libraries regularly (as often as they’d like but at least a couple of times a year). News would include personnel information (who got that great job you advertised), stories about upcoming (or completed!) programs and events, and anything else the liaison feels like sharing about their libraries.

We hope that this kind of information sharing will help us all feel more connected to one another and be more aware of the goings on at each other’s libraries.

Naturally, the liaisons will also receive any important news from ACRL Oregon to pass along to their colleagues at their libraries.

We also see the liaison program as a way of increasing participation in ACRL Oregon. Not everyone has the time, support, or inclination to serve on the Board but many people do have an interest in participating a way that requires less time and/or travel. Serving as the liaison from your institution could be just the thing!

Interested? Please let Diane Sotak know! She’ll get you set up with an account on the blog and you’ll be off to the races!

I know it was a real pleasure to join the board and find out how many great things the board is working on. Its been a treat to inherit some great projects and I know that there will be a lot of good things going on next year as well. Consider serving!
