This year’s award winner is the UO Libraries’ Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP). ODNP is recognized for the program’s positive impact on Oregon libraries and residents in digitizing historic Oregon newspaper content and making it freely available to the public through a keyword-searchable database.

The ODNP resource, offers users access to more than 180,000 pages of content from 31 Oregon newspapers dating from 1846 to 1922. Samples of historical research by public users include such varied topics as the 1905 World’s Fair in Portland, Hawaiians in Oregon, bicycling, tattoos, salmon, and even peanut butter can be found on the ODNP blog.

ACRL-Oregon commends this team for their initiative in pursuing grant money to assist in funding the project and their commitment to making searchable historic content more widely accessible.

ODNP is funded through a combination of grants from the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA), the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

Karen Estlund, Associate Professor and Head of Digital Library Services at the University of Oregon, will accept the award on behalf of the team at the ACRL Oregon & Washington Joint Fall Conference 2011.

Northwest Christian University library director Steve Silver has begun a sabbatical that will extend over the summer. Silver is researching the history of NCU’s rare Bible collection. NCU’s founding president Eugene Sanderson went to England 100 years ago this summer to purchase Bibles, which became the foundation for the current collection. Silver hopes to recreate and document as much about that original trip as is possible, researching in NCU’s archives as well as the rare Bible collection itself. Later this summer he will visit England in the hopes of visiting some of the same bookshops and sellers Sanderson purchased from originally. Silver will be blogging his sabbatical project and experience at: www.silversabbatical.wordpress.com. He will return to his duties in the Kellenberger Library at NCU starting August 15.

Deadline
The application deadline is October 22, 2010.

Notifications

Will your library be the next winner of the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award? If you think the answer could be “Yes,” please read on!

The ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, sponsored by YBP Library Services, recognizes one outstanding community college, college, and university library each year for the accomplishments of librarians and other library staff as they come together as members of a team to support the mission of their institution. In recent years, award-winning institutions like Indiana University (2010), Carleton College (2008), and Hostos Community College (CUNY) (2007) have been recognized for the way in which librarians and library staff have come together to engage their students, faculty, and community users to design and deliver innovative services, spaces, and collections that represent the best of what a 21st-century library can be. It’s your turn!

Nominations are currently being accepted for the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, and are due on December 3, 2010. If you think you work in an outstanding library that deserves recognition, please review the guidelines for preparing a nomination at <http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/awards/excellenceacademic.cfm>. If you have colleagues at a library that deserves recognition, please share this message with them. ACRL members are an integral part of the award process, and we depend on you to help to ensure that the best of our colleagues are recognized for their work.

Complete information about ACRL’s Awards Program is on the ACRL Web site <www.acrl.org> (click on “Awards”). An article in the September 2010 issue of C&RL News outlines all ACRL awards programs, and is available at <http://crln.acrl.org/content/71/8/440.full>.
