The exhibit “Of Place and Memory: The Yizkor Book as a Window into a World Destroyed” at the Portland State University Library tells the stories of Eastern European Jews and their communities destroyed in the Holocaust. It is the result of a first-time collaboration between the University Library and the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies.

Yizkor books were assembled by survivors from all over Eastern Europe to document their lives, those of their lost family members and friends and their obliterated shtetls (towns). Part memoir, part family tree, part family photo album, Yizkor books tell not only of a people and culture destroyed, but also of a people’s renewal and post-1945 regeneration that followed in Israel and the Diaspora.

Portland State University Library’s Special Collections is the steward of 136 Yizkor books—the largest collection of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Its Yizkor holdings include a volume dating back to 1929, published in Pinsk, well prior to World War II, as well as unique copies not yet included in the recent digitization project undertaken by the New York Public Library’s Dorot Jewish Division. “Of Place and Memory” is curated by Natan M. Meir, the Lorry I. Lokey Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies, with assistance from Special Collections.

The exhibit is in the first floor elevator lobby of the library and will be open until December 16.

A new open access, peer-reviewed journal is available through Pacific University Library’s repository, CommonKnowledge. The journal is a partnership between Pacific University and Central Washington University. Please feel free to share information about this journal with faculty at your institutions – we hope this will be a great opportunity for undergraduates to have their work published/shared more broadly. Information about the journal is below:

The Pacific Northwest Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities is a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding scholarship by undergraduates and their mentors from academic institutions of higher learning in the Pacific Northwest. The Journal accepts submissions of research articles, fiction, poetry, photography, videos, and other creative works from undergraduate students in all academic disciplines. Each submission must be the original work of at least one undergraduate student with at least one faculty mentor, although the work may be submitted shortly after the student(s) has graduated.

Additionally, the Journal provides an opportunity for undergraduates to gain valuable experience with the peer-review process. Faculty and students at institutions of higher learning in the Pacific Northwest review every submission. Whenever possible, reviews are done by student-faculty pairs so that student reviewers can be mentored through the process.

Thus, the purpose of the Journal is:

To encourage and showcase scholarly work in all disciplines.

To provide a beneficial learning experience for undergraduate students.

To provide a setting for dissemination of research, ideas and creative concepts.

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and will be published on the Journal website after successful review. Our goal is to have submissions reviewed within 8 – 12 weeks. However, the process may take longer depending on the availability of reviewers.

If you are interested in assisting with the Journal or serving as a peer reviewer, please contact the Co-managing Editors, Dr. James Butler (jjbutler@pacificu.edu) and Dr. Natalie Lupton (luptonn@cwu.edu).

On September 14, ACRL released “Value of Academic Libraries: A Comprehensive Research Review and Report .” Developed for the association by Megan Oakleaf of the iSchool at Syracuse University, this valuable resource reviews the quantitative and qualitative literature, methodologies, and best practices currently in place for demonstrating the value of academic libraries. The full report, along with supplemental materials and a podcast interview with ACRL President Lisa Hinchliffe and author Megan Oakleaf, is freely available online at www.acrl.ala.org/value.

Increasing recognition of the value of libraries and librarians by leaders in higher education, information technology, funding agencies, and campus decision making is one of ACRL’s six strategic priorities. Recognizing the sense of urgency around this issue, the report is intended to help academic librarians participate in the conversation and to identify resources to support them in demonstrating the value of academic libraries in clear, measurable ways.

In the week since the report’s release, it has received coverage from a number of higher education and library publications, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and Library Journal. Lisa Hinchliffe shares this press coverage, along with your comments and reactions to the report, in her blog post A Week in the Life of the Value Report
