The 2012 Oregon Information Literacy Summit is almost here!

Please join us on Saturday, May 19^th at the Chemeketa Community College Yamhill Valley Campus in McMinnville.

In addition to the sessions listed on the ILAGO site, we will also be joined by Terri Kuechle, middle-school librarian from the Beaverton School District. Terri has done extensive work building Beaverton’s sophisticated information literacy model and infrastructure and we are thrilled that she will be sharing her work at the Summit.

Applications for the ACRL Information Literacy Immersion Program Assessment and Intentional Teaching Tracks are due Monday, May 7, 2012.

Immersion Program

Why Immersion?

ACRL’s Immersion Program allows you to embrace your educational role by embarking on a path of teacher development and pedagogical inquiry in a community of practice for academic librarians devoted to collaborative learning, individual renewal, and instructional effectiveness.

ACRL offers four unique tracks of the Immersion Program each year. The long-standing Teacher and Program Tracks are offered together in summer; the Intentional Teaching and Assessment Tracks are offered in fall. The Immersion Program tracks are not sequential; individuals can apply for and attend whichever track(s) are best for them.

Assessment Track

Immersion Program Curriculum

Teacher Track

This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. Curriculum includes classroom techniques, learning theory, leadership, and assessment framed in the context of information literacy. Participants selected for the Teacher Track will prepare a description of an instructional situation and a related presentation in advance of the Immersion program. During Immersion, participants will revise the presentation based on feedback from colleagues and faculty.

Program Track

This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Change dynamics, systems thinking, institutional outcomes assessment, scalability, and the integration of teaching, learning, and technology will be brought to bear on analyzing the various programmatic challenges presented in the case studies. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution.

Assessment: Demonstrating the Educational Value of the Library Track

(Formerly titled Assessment Immersion) This program is intended for experienced academic librarians (5+ years teaching experience) active in teaching and learning and those with leadership roles for information literacy program development who want to improve their knowledge and practice of both classroom and program assessment. This program will approach assessment from a learning-centered perspective; participants will emerge with a broader understanding of assessment and how to use assessment as an important tool to guide evidence-based classroom, curriculum and program development. Participants will develop a plan for their assessment activities which will form the basis for future engagement with these issues both individually and as a leader of IL initiatives at their institutions.

Intentional Teaching: Reflective Teaching to Improve Student Learning Track

(Formerly titled Intentional Teacher) This program is aimed at the experienced academic librarian (5+ years teaching experience, in a library or other setting) who wants to become more self-aware and self-directed as a teacher. This program facilitates the process of critical reflection through peer discussion, readings and personal reflection as a pathway to professional growth and renewal. The program offers a mixture of structured and co-constructed learning segments such as peer discussions, individual reading and reflection times, and participant-led communities of practice.

Getting to the Heart of Online Instruction and Training (OLA Annual 2012 Pre-conference)

Join Meredith Farkas for a half-day workshop about online instruction at the OLA Annual 2012 Pre-conference. Learn how to:

Analyze your population(s) to determine the best mode(s) of instructional delivery
Determine the pros and cons of technologies for instruction and training
Develop a sustainable strategy for the creation, maintenance and integration of online learning materials

Head of Instructional Services at Portland State University and a lecturer at San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science, Meredith Farkas is also the author of the book, Social Software in Libraries: Building Collaboration, Communication and Community Online. In addition, she writes the monthly column “Technology in Practice” for American Libraries. Meredith was honored in 2008 and 2011 with the WISE Excellence in Online Education Award and in 2009 with the LITA/Library Hi Tech award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology.

Have ideas for a terrific conference program or preconference? The Program Committee would love to hear from you! Online forms for proposal submissions are now available on the Oregon Library Association website: http://bit.ly/nP8Q7A

Please submit proposals by Friday, October 7th.

Preconference and program ideas do not have to be completely finalized at this point. Enter general information on the topic and speaker(s) with as much detail as possible. Each program or preconference must be sponsored by an OLA unit, but if you have a great idea and don’t have a sponsor, the Program Committee will attempt some matchmaking.

“Oregon Libraries: Right at the Heart of Things” is the theme selected by President Robert Holshof-Schmidt for the 2012 OLA Conference, to be held in Bend April 25-27. Mark your calendars for this “can’t-miss” event.

Registration is now openfor this year’s combined Washington and Oregon ACRL Chapter conference. It is scheduled for October 27th and 28th at the Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest near Eatonville, WA.

The NEH offers seminars for community college faculty, as well as others for all academic faculty. These are great continuing education opportunities and I will be attending one in August, hosted by the Newberry Library, which will focus on the Pullman Company, its town, and the famous Pullman strike. It will also have material on the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Union. I’m particularly tickled to spend a week in the Newberry, and happy that they have a relationship with a ‘by the week’ apartment rental that gives me a week in downtown Chicago for $350!

I went to a similar seminar last summer in Mississippi on the Civil Rights movement that was one of the best things I have ever done. The NEH considers librarians as faculty, even if by contract they are not. Are you listening Mt. Hood?
