This year’s award winner is the UO Libraries’ Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP). ODNP is recognized for the program’s positive impact on Oregon libraries and residents in digitizing historic Oregon newspaper content and making it freely available to the public through a keyword-searchable database.

The ODNP resource, offers users access to more than 180,000 pages of content from 31 Oregon newspapers dating from 1846 to 1922. Samples of historical research by public users include such varied topics as the 1905 World’s Fair in Portland, Hawaiians in Oregon, bicycling, tattoos, salmon, and even peanut butter can be found on the ODNP blog.

ACRL-Oregon commends this team for their initiative in pursuing grant money to assist in funding the project and their commitment to making searchable historic content more widely accessible.

ODNP is funded through a combination of grants from the Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA), the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

Karen Estlund, Associate Professor and Head of Digital Library Services at the University of Oregon, will accept the award on behalf of the team at the ACRL Oregon & Washington Joint Fall Conference 2011.

The project database is available now in beta form (http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/)

Have ideas for a terrific conference program or preconference? The Program Committee would love to hear from you! Online forms for proposal submissions are now available on the Oregon Library Association website: http://bit.ly/nP8Q7A

Please submit proposals by Friday, October 7th.

Preconference and program ideas do not have to be completely finalized at this point. Enter general information on the topic and speaker(s) with as much detail as possible. Each program or preconference must be sponsored by an OLA unit, but if you have a great idea and don’t have a sponsor, the Program Committee will attempt some matchmaking.

“Oregon Libraries: Right at the Heart of Things” is the theme selected by President Robert Holshof-Schmidt for the 2012 OLA Conference, to be held in Bend April 25-27. Mark your calendars for this “can’t-miss” event.

Please contact me if you have questions.

Thank you!

In addition to the programs offered by ACRL at OLA, there were a few events hosted by OLA’s Legislative Committee. On Wednesday, a free “pre-conference/workshop” was offered to tour the Capitol, observe a hearing, and get an overview of the legislative issues that were hot that week.

Arriving on time for the tour, our schedule immediately changed because Governor Kitzhaber and State Treasurer Ted Wheeler were testifying in a public hearing regarding the state’s “kicker.” What an opportunity to see our Governor and Treasurer testifying in front of the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee, chaired by Senator Ginny Burdick!

You can read a press release about Treasurer Wheeler’s remarks (pdf), and here’s a brief news story on their joint testimony.

Then resuming our agenda for the day we toured the Capitol building to see the house and senate floors, get a sense of the dorm-like halls of representative and senate offices, and to find the cafe in the building’s basement.

Finally, we discussed current issues in the state legislature. School libraries, county law libraries, and public records are still hot issues. Newly introduced has been the House Joint Resolution 34 & 35.

“HJR 34 addresses providing ;sexually explicit; material to minors and HJR 35 replaces Oregon’s free speech provision with the federal Constitution’s provision…OLA will testify in opposition to both. Action needed: If the measures move to the Senate and vote, contact your Senator.” –OLA Issues Handout

The end of the pre-conference workshop was not it for the Legislative Committee at OLA Annual, however. On Thursday, the committee hosted a program that offered conference attendees the opportunity to chat with state legislators. Representatives Julie Parrish and Mike McLane talked about their experiences as freshmen representatives, and offered their perspectives on hearing from constituents. Additionally, Representative Phil Barnhart, a veteran of the Oregon House of Representatives, provided his views and ideas from his tenure in service.

It was a great way to end the day on Thursday, by hearing three distinct perspectives on serving in the state legislature. I resolved to be more active than I already am.

There will be more legislative updates to come, especially after I head to Washington D.C. for National Library Legislative Day!

ACRL Oregon was pleased to have good turnout for its programs at the OLA Annual Conference in early April.

The preconference on Managing Vendor Relationships was well attended and included librarians from all types of libraries, with public librarians in the majority. It was great to be able to offer a preconference that had such wide appeal!

Many of the conference presentations are now available in Northwest Central with a search on OLA 2011. The available ACRL Oregon-sponsored ones are:

All Textbooks in the PCC Library, presented by Tony Greiner

Repackage! Repurpose! Aggregate!: Leveraging Free Content to Create Free Web Services, presented by Hope Leman

They Blinded me With Science: Turning Qualitative Research into Action, presented by Hannah Gascho Rempel, Uta Hussong-Christian and Margaret Mellinger
